The Dodge Journey first was first launched in 2009. Since then the mid-sized crossover SUV really hasn’t been changed in a major way. The next-generation of the model will be coming in 2016.

Automotive News is reporting that the Dodge Journey will be taking production away from the Chrysler 200 sedan, which is being built in the Sterling Heights Assembly plant in Michigan. Production of the Journey currently is in Toluca, Mexico.

The rumor being reported on is that, like the Chrysler 200, the new Dodge Journey will be using the same Giulieta platform that’s being used for the Dodge Dart and the upcoming Jeep Cherokee.

By moving production up to Michigan may be happening to help reduce costs by making it easier for suppliers to provide common components necessary to build the vehicles. Seems like a smart choice, especially if Dodge plans on really pushing the new generation of the Dodge Journey.
