What Lies in Dodge’s Future?

13-avenger-mountainWho knows the future will bring, there’s just no predicting a thing.

Wards Auto reports that Chrysler is planning to have the majority of the Dodge line-up renewed by 2016.  But what is going to happen after that?

Currently, 60 percent of Chrysler products will be undergoing an update before the end of 2016.  When that happens, 75 percent of the company’s vehicles will be based on the CUSW platform that is with the 2013 Dodge Dart.

Dodge’s future, right now, will have the Avenger being replaced in 2016 by a combination of the Journey and Avenger.  The Charger and the Challenger will be getting refreshed come 2014 and the Grand Caravan will be getting a new look for 2015.

After that, it’s not known what to expect from the car maker.  Ward believes that Chrysler may introduce or redesign several vehicles for 2017.  Chrysler may even be considering doing away with the Dodge brand.  It’s seems absurd, Dodge vehicles typically out-sell Chrysler vehicles.  So for now, we’ll just wait and see what the future has in store for Dodge brand.

Dodge Dart Growing in Popularity

11-dart-silverThe Dodge Dart is an oddity. It’s been having a hard time finding buyers. The strange thing is, though, that the the ones who are buying it can’t figure out why the Dart isn’t in everyone’s driveways.

The Rockford Register Star has a great piece examine that the only problem with the Dart seems to be one of messaging. This is a view shared by both analysts and drivers who bought one. As one owner put it, “It’s the best-kept secret around.”

As any reader here may remember, the reviews prior to and following the release of the Dart were very positive. From Autoweek to the North American International Auto Show, the Dart pleased enough editors to make it on numerous “Best of” awards.

Chrysler even put together a good marketing campagin that included excellent commercials and even getting Tom Brady to be included in the ads.

However, the initial sales were sluggish. Chrysler believes a reason for this is because the majority of Darts had manual transmission while US buyers have a preference for automatics. Another is that the Dart had a six-speed transmission that, while popular in Eurpoe, is seen as underpowered here.

Chrysler is taking the steps to address these concerns in an effort to make the Dart more attractive to consumers. They already resolved the manual-only problem. That leaves the six-speed transmission which the plan is to include the Dart with the developing nine-speed transmission currently being built in Indiana.

Buyers think it’s only a matter of time before the Dart picks up popularity. A Total Quality Index done by Strategic Vision showed that the Dart was the top ranked compact sedan this year. The company further elaborated on the buyer’s love for the Dart by saying “What you have in the Dart is a car that the buyers love, and Chrysler and Dodge need to do a better job of getting that message our to consumers. It will be a powerful message.”

The Dodge Dart seems to need time to grow. The people behind the wheel are coming away extremely satisfied. It may just be a late bloomer. “The Dart is going to get a second and third chance with the public. Chrysler is becoming more focused in its marketing of the car. You’ll see sales continue to grow” says Chris Chaney, Senior VP at Strategic Vision.

Dodge Challenger Spotted With New Hellcat Engine?

Dodge-Challenger_SRT8_392_2011_800x600_wallpaper_04More fuel to add to the fire about the Hellcat engine due to a recent spy photo surfacing today.  The photographer was able to capture a possible Dodge Challenger SRT8 that looks to be using the experimental technology.

According to the rumor, Chrysler has been developing a new engine to give their muscle cars some extra oomph to compete with their rivals.  The engine, known as ‘Hellcat’ currently, is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine.  That would provide for a power range of 560 horsepower to 640 horsepower.  The real topper of the rumor is that this will also have the new eight-speed transmission that Chrysler is putting into most of their upcoming vehicles.

The reason why this photo has people thinking it’s the Hellcat is because of a few choice visual clues.  The first is that the brakes are enlarged that would allow for increased stopping power.  The exhaust in the back are also different and bigger than what’s typically seen on a Challenger SRT8.  According to the person who took the photograph, he described the sound coming out of the car as being like “nothing short of thunder.”  Also noted is that the car is missing the driver’s side headlights.  This might show that the engineers are looking at new ways to help air intake and that it would be right where the headlights are.

Currently, Chrysler is keeping quiet on the Hellcat.  They’ve released no official information on what to expect.
